BACKING FOR GOVERNMENT INSULATION MESSAGE Westville Supports Government Focus on Insulation
A Nottinghamshire company has welcomed the Government’s renewed focus on energy bills as plans to encourage householders to make their homes warmer and cheaper to run were announced by ministers.
Under the new initiative, consumers are to be offered long-term loans to pay for insulation, solar panels or other green technology, which can then be repayed through energy bills.
The Government wants to save 29 per cent of carbon emissions from UK homes by 2020. Ed Miliband, the Energy Secretary, said property values would be enhanced as energy costs became "significantly lower."
He said the plans would allow seven million British households to benefit from upgrades and create up to 65,000 jobs in the green homes industry.
Some 500 homes in Birmingham, Sunderland, London and Gloucestershire have already tested a £4m pilot for the Pay As You Save scheme.
Sean Stevenson, the general manager of Nottinghamshire insulation specialists Westville Limited, said encouraging householders to insulate their homes was vital.
“We welcome any scheme that helps people properly insulate their homes,” he said. “Insulation is the most effective way of keeping fuel bills down. A properly insulated home uses far less fuel than a property without insulation – in fact more than 40 per cent of a home’s energy will escape through lofts and walls with no insulation.
“By insulating your loft and cavity walls you can typically cut around £365 per year from your bill. Generally, the cost of installing cavity wall and loft insulation pays for itself within just two years.”
But Sean added there are other ways to protect your home from the cold: “Westville is at the forefront of insulation technology and we specialise in insulating solid walls as well. This means virtually all buildings can be insulated, whatever their age. For householders with solid walls the savings are even greater.”
Westville Limited, based in Shirebrook, has already worked with the Government on energy issues. Representatives were invited to a workshop in Westminster, to join the Department for Energy and Climate Change in working with leaders from companies and organisations concerned about environmental impact.
The company is also spearheading a regional campaign in the East Midlands to get homes insulated against the cold, working with local authorities and developers
