Impact of Fuel Poverty on Children
As Sport Relief is hitting our media along with the numerous great causes it will help, a look in our own back yard does open up some areas we can help ourselves, our children and our communities.
Such as - Children growing up in a poorly heated home are 30% more likely to suffer asthma. There are also strong links to Physical Ill Health, Psycological Health, Educational Attainment and Social Exclusion. In the East Midlands the NEA quote that 134,500 children are living in fuel poverty
A 1% rise in Fuel bills will see this grow by 600 children.
There are many programmes in place to address this - but ignorance to what can be done to help yourself is high. Having the correct heating system in your home amd then properly insulating it has the biggest impact by a country mile, and Insulating your home has never been cheaper with grants available for nearly all Cavity Wall and Loft Insulation measures. For Solid Walls the products are becoming increasingly cost effective.
So whilst thinking about how we can help others - please take the time to think how you or someone you know with young children can also help themselves.
